  We report measurements of single and double spin asymmetries for $W^{\pm}$
and $Z/\gamma^*$ boson production in longitudinally polarized $p+p$ collisions
at $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The asymmetries for
$W^{\pm}$ were measured as a function of the decay lepton pseudorapidity, which
provides a theoretically clean probe of the proton's polarized quark
distributions at the scale of the $W$ mass. The results are compared to
theoretical predictions, constrained by recent polarized DIS measurements, and
show a preference for a sizable, positive up antiquark polarization in the
range $0.05<x<0.2$.

  We present the analysis of the inclusive $K^{0}$ production in p+p and p+Nb
collisions measured with the HADES detector at a beam kinetic energy of 3.5
GeV. Data are compared to the GiBUU transport model. The data suggest the
presence of a repulsive momentum-dependent kaon potential as predicted by the
Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). For the kaon at rest and at normal nuclear
density, the ChPT potential amounts to $\approx 35$ MeV. A detailed tuning of
the kaon production cross sections implemented in the model has been carried
out to reproduce the experimental data measured in p+p collisions. The
uncertainties in the parameters of the model were examined with respect to the
sensitivity of the experimental results from p+Nb collisions to the in-medium
kaon potential.

  The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment aims at measuring fundamental physical
parameters to high precision and exploring physics beyond the standard model.
Nuclear targets introduce complications towards that aim. We investigate the
uncertainties in the energy reconstruction, based on quasielastic scattering
relations, due to nuclear effects. The reconstructed event distributions as a
function of energy tend to be smeared out and shifted by several 100 MeV in
their oscillatory structure if standard event selection is used. We show that a
more restrictive experimental event selection offers the possibility to reach
the accuracy needed for a determination of the mass ordering and the
$CP$-violating phase. Quasielastic-based energy reconstruction could thus be a
viable alternative to the calorimetric reconstruction also at higher energies.

  During 2013-2015 an expansion of the China JinPing underground Laboratory
(CJPL) will be undertaken along a main branch of a bypass tunnel in the JinPing
tunnel complex. This second phase of CJPL will increase laboratory space to
approximately 96,000 m^3, which can be compared to the existing CJPL-I volume
of 4,000 m^3. One design configuration has eight additional hall spaces, each
over 60 m long and approximately 12 m in width, with overburdens of about 2.4
km of rock, oriented parallel to and away from the main water transport and
auto traffic tunnels. Concurrent with the excavation activities, planning is
underway for dark matter and other rare-event detectors, as well as for
geophysics/engineering and other coupled multi-disciplinary sensors. In the
town meeting on 8 September, 2013 at Asilomar, CA, associated with the 13th
International Conference on Topics in Astroparticle and Underground Physics
(TAUP), presentations and panel discussions addressed plans for one-ton
expansions of the current CJPL germanium detector array of the China Darkmatter
EXperiment (CDEX) collaboration and of the duel-phase xenon detector of the
Panda-X collaboration, as well as possible new detector initiatives for dark
matter studies, low-energy solar neutrino detection, neutrinoless double beta
searches, and geoneutrinos. JinPing was also discussed as a site for a
low-energy nuclear astrophysics accelerator. Geophysics/engineering
opportunities include acoustic and micro-seismic monitoring of rock bursts
during and after excavation, coupled-process in situ measurements, local,
regional, and global monitoring of seismically induced radon emission, and
electromagnetic signals.

Title: Constraints on the Path-Length Dependence of Jet Quenching in Nuclear
  Collisions at RHIC and LHC

  Recent data on the high-pT pion nuclear modification factor, $R_{AA}(p_T)$,
and its elliptic azimuthal asymmetry, $v_2(p_T)$, from RHIC/BNL and LHC/CERN
are analyzed in terms of a wide class of jet-energy loss models coupled to
different (2+1)d transverse plus Bjorken expanding hydrodynamic fields. We test
the consistency of each model by demanding a simultaneous account of the
azimuthal, the transverse momentum, and the centrality dependence of the data
at both 0.2 and 2.76 ATeV energies. We find a rather broad class of jet-energy
independent energy-loss models $dE/dx= \kappa(T) x^z T^{2+z} \zeta_q$ that,
when coupled to bulk constrained temperature fields T(x,t), can account for the
current data at the $\chi^2<2$ level with different temperature-dependent
jet-medium couplings and path-length dependence exponents $0\le z \le 2$. We
test the sensitivity of predictions to different skewed energy-loss
fluctuations via a convenient scaling factor distributed in a finite range $0<
\zeta_q < 2+q$ with unit mean. While a previously proposed AdS/CFT jet-energy
loss model with a temperature-independent jet-medium coupling as well as a
near-$T_c$ dominated, pQCD-inspired energy-loss scenario are shown to be
inconsistent with the LHC data, once the parameters are constrained by fitting
to RHIC results, we find several new solutions with a temperature-dependent
jet-medium coupling. We conclude that the current level of statistical and
systematic uncertainties of the measured data does not allow a constraint on
the path-length exponent z to a range narrower than [0-2].

  Parton physics, when formulated as light-front correlations, are difficult to
study non-perturbatively, despite the promise of light-front quantization.
Recently an alternative approach to partons have been proposed by re-visiting
original Feynman picture of a hadron moving at asymptotically large momentum.
Here I formulate the approach in the language of an effective field theory for
a large hadron momentum $P$ in lattice QCD, LaMET for short. I show that using
this new effective theory, parton properties, including light-front parton wave
functions, can be extracted from lattice observables in a systematic expansion
of $1/P$, much like that the parton distributions can be extracted from the
hard scattering data at momentum scales of a few GeV.

  The neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay is a unique process to
identify the Majorana nature of massive neutrinos, and its rate depends on the
size of the effective Majorana neutrino mass $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$. We put
forward a novel "coupling-rod" diagram to describe $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$ in
the complex plane, by which the effects of the neutrino mass ordering and
CP-violating phases on $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$ are intuitively understood. We
show that this geometric language allows us to easily obtain the maximum and
minimum of $|\langle m\rangle_{ee}|$. It remains usable even if there is a kind
of new physics contributing to $\langle m\rangle_{ee}$, and it can also be
extended to describe the effective Majorana masses $\langle m\rangle_{e\mu}$,
$\langle m\rangle_{e\tau}$, $\langle m\rangle_{\mu\mu}$, $\langle
m\rangle_{\mu\tau}$ and $\langle m\rangle_{\tau\tau}$ which may appear in some
other lepton-number-violating processes.
